TvRockLive.com : How does it feel to be recording albums and touring 47 years later?
Mick Box : Wonderful, because I still have the same passion for what I do as when I first started in this business. Touring and Recording is part of my life and hopefully it will continue to be so. To be still creating new music and playing concerts in 61 countries around the world is just amazing.
TvRockLive.com : Are you going to do something special for your 50th anniversary?
MB : I am sure we will, but right now we are immersed in the promotion of our new album ‘’Living The Dream’’. Ideas will surface and something special will come out of it for 2020…
TvRockLive.com : UH has been going through many line-up changes, is there any line-up you would say it was the best one of the group’s career except the current one?
MB : That is difficult to answer, but I would say that the successful Box/Byron/Kerslake/Thain/Hensley line-up in the 70’s had the same creative chemistry as the present-day Box/Lanzon/Shaw/Gilbrook/Rimmer line-up.
TvRockLive.com : Are you still in contact with Ken Hensley nowadays and will you do something with him in the future?
MB : I only discuss by email historical Heep things with Ken when they come up and need decisions. Other than that, we have no other contact. Ken was never friends with anyone in the band to be honest, and it was just a business relationship to him, which he has stated many times himself. We did a reunion show in Moscow with Ken and Lee a while back, but other than that he leads his own life and we lead ours. He lives in Spain and is a Born again Christian and he does solo shows, and he also works with pick up bands mostly in Russia, Ukraine and Scandinavia. I have no inclination to keep looking back but moving forward and creating new music, and along with touring, that is what excites me the most.
TvRockLive.com : We all know Lee Kerslake is very ill, how was it to have him on stage recently?
MB : It was a lot of fun. I am still great friends with Lee and we often talk on the phone or we may go and have dinner or lunch at his favourite fish restaurant when I am off the road. We are like Brothers with different Mothers. It was a wish of Lees to one more time appear on stage with Heep, and recently when we played at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London, I invited him up to sing on the song ‘’Lady in Black’’ and then he joined Russell on the drums. It was an emotional moment for all of us for sure.
TvRockLive.com : I’m a very big Trevor Bolder’s fan since the Spiders, could you tell us about a special souvenir you still have with him?
MB : Just beautiful memories of a talented musician, songwriter, singer and special friend.
TvRockLive.com : What do you think of the Hard/Heavy scene nowadays? Any new band you particularly like?
MB : That is hard to say and when I do like something it has veteran musicians involved like The Winery Dogs. I quite like certain parts of The Rival Sons, Steve Perry’s new album ‘Traces’ is cool, Judas Priest’s Firepower is Metal to the core, I do quite like Cats in Space and their album ‘Scarecrow’, Sons of Apollo ‘Psychotic Symphony’, is intense, and the young band Greta Van Fleet are bringing it all round in a complete circle.
TvRockLive.com : How was it to play the Hellfest some years ago? What do you think of the french fans?
MB : I loved it and the welcome from the French Fans was immense. It was a well-organized festival too, and when we hit the stage the atmosphere was incredible and one we would love to repeat.
TvRockLive.com : How do you explain you didn’t have the same success as Deep Purple through the years since your music styles are pretty near?
MB : Management would be the most direct answer. Our Manager went bankrupt after building up an amazing empire, and we lost a lot of royalties and all that goes with it, so it was a hard thing to recover from as he was also our Record Company, and then we went through a succession of Managers which never worked out, so I managed and Tour Managed the band for about 10 years. Now we have top Management in a company called Siren, (Ace Trump & Adam Parsons) who also look after Europe, Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, Saxon and Heep to name but a few. Deep Purple still have the same management they started having success with, so they did not suffer the disruption we encountered.
TvRockLive.com : Since it is your 25th studio album, where do you find the inspiration nowadays?
MB : Playing in 61 countries you would be hard put not to find inspiration. As long as you have your creative antenna out, you will always find something that inspires you.

TvRockLive.com : Ça te fait quoi de continuer à enregistrer des albums et à faire des tournées 47 ans plus tard ?
Mick Box : C’est génial parce que j’ai toujours la même envie pour ce que je fais qu’au début de ma carrière. Tourner et enregistrer font partie de ma vie et j’espère que ça va continuer. Créer de la musique et jouer dans 61 pays, c’est toujours passionnant.
TvRockLive.com : Feras-tu quelque chose de spécial pour les 50 ans du groupe ?
MB : Je suis sûr qu’on va le faire mais pour l’instant on en est en pleine promo de notre nouvel album ‘’Living The Dream’’. Des idées vont faire surface et il en ressortira forcément quelque chose en 2020…
TvRockLive.com : Uriah Heep a traversé beaucoup de changements de musiciens, y a-t-il un Line-Up dont tu dirais qu’il était le meilleur de la carrière du groupe, exception faite de l’actuel ?
MB : C’est difficile à dire mais je pense que celui qui a eu le plus gros succès avec Box/Byron/Kerslake/Thain/Hensley dans les 70’s avait la même alchimie créatrice que l’actuel à savoir Box/Lanzon/Shaw/Gilbrook/Rimmer.
TvRockLive.com : Es-tu toujours en contact avec Ken Hensley à l’heure actuelle et referez-vous quelque chose ensemble dans le futur ?
MB : Je discute seulement avec Ken par courriel des aspects historiques du groupe quand il y a des décisions à prendre… En dehors de ça, pas de contact ! Pour être honnête Ken n’a jamais eu d’ami dans le groupe. Et c’était juste une relation basée sur le Business, il l’a d’ailleurs répété lui même à plusieurs reprises. On a fait un concert ensemble à Moscou avec Ken et Lee il y a quelque temps mais à part ça il mène sa vie et nous la nôtre… Il vit en Espagne et est un «Chrétien régénéré (Born Again Christian)». Il fait des Shows en solo et il travaille avec des groupes qui l’accompagnent en Russie, Ukraine et Scandinavie. Je regarde rarement vers le passé mais plutôt vers l’avenir et la nouveauté et c’est ce qui m’excite le plus avec les tournées.
TvRockLive.com : Nous savons tous que Lee Kerslake est gravement malade, c’était comment de se retrouver avec lui sur scène il y a peu ?
MB : On y a pris beaucoup de plaisir. Je suis toujours un grand ami de Lee. On se parle souvent au téléphone et on se retrouve pour manger dans son restaurant de poissons favori quand je ne suis pas en tournée. On est comme des frères avec des mères différentes ! C’était son souhait de remonter une nouvelle fois sur scène avec Uriah Heep et récemment, quand on a joué au Shepherds Bush Empire à Londres, je l’ai invité à chanter sur «Lady In Black» et ensuite il a rejoint Russell à la batterie. C’était un moment très émouvant pour nous tous bien évidemment…
TvRockLive.com : Je suis toujours un très grand fan de Trevor Bolder depuis les Spiders From Mars, pourrais-tu nous dire le souvenir que tu as de lui ?
MB : Je n’ai que de bons souvenirs d’un musicien, d’un compositeur et d’un chanteur talentueux et c’était vraiment un grand ami !
TvRockLive.com : Que penses-tu de la scène Hard/Heavy d’aujourd’hui ? Y a-t-il un groupe que tu apprécies particulièrement ?
MB : C’est difficile à dire mais quand j’apprécie vraiment un groupe, il y a souvent des vétérans de cette scène en son sein comme : The Winery Dogs… J’aime beaucoup certains morceaux de Rival Sons, le nouvel album de Steve Perry «Traces» qui est vraiment Cool, le «Firepower» de Judas qui est un retour aux sources du Metal ! J’aime bien aussi Cats In Space notamment leur album «Scarecrow», le «Psychotic Symphony» de Sons Of Apollo est puissant et le jeune groupe Greta Van Fleet est en train de boucler la boucle…
TvRockLive.com : C’était comment de jouer au Hellfest il y a quelques années ? Que penses-tu des fans français ?
MB : J’ai adoré et l’accueil des fans français fut incroyable ! C’était aussi un festival très bien organisé… Quand on est montés sur scène, l’ambiance était incroyable et on aimerait bien y retourner !
TvRockLive.com : Comment expliques-tu qu’avec des styles musicaux assez proches, vous n’ayez pas rencontré le même succès sur la durée que Deep Purple ?
MB : La réponse la plus évidente se trouve dans notre Management ! Notre Manager (Gerry Bron ndlr) a fait faillite après avoir construit un empire incroyable. On a perdu toutes nos Royalties et tout ce qui va avec. Ça a été dur de remonter la pente car c’était aussi notre maison de disques (Bronze Records ndlr). On est ensuite passés entre les mains d’une succession de Managers qui nous ont tous plantés et j’ai fini par m’occuper moi-même pendant 10 ans du management et des tournées du groupe ! Maintenant nous avons un management digne de ce nom, Siren (Ace Trump & Adam Parsons), qui s’occupe aussi de Europe, Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, Saxon pour n’en nommer que quelques uns. Deep Purple a toujours le même management que quand ils ont commencé à avoir du succès, ils n’ont pas souffert des même aléas que nous… Ceci explique cela !
TvRockLive.com : Sachant qu’il s’agit de ton 25ème album studio, où trouves-tu ton inspiration après tant d’années ?
MB : Le fait de jouer dans 61 pays facilite grandement les choses pour trouver des idées… Tant que ton antenne créative est en action tu trouveras toujours une source d’inspiration !
