À l’occasion de la venue à Paris de Journey pour un concert au Bataclan, le 16 juin 2009, j’ai eu l’immense joie de pouvoir rencontrer le claviériste du groupe Jonathan Cain, et de faire une Interview pour le site www.nath-urlich.com, en partenariat avec Radio Mercure. C’est un souvenir très important que j’avais envie de partager et de faire revivre cet unique moment par l’intermédiaire de TvRockLive.com.

TvRockLive.com : C’est un grand honneur de te rencontrer et de pouvoir te poser quelques questions sur ta superbe carrière ! Merci beaucoup Jonathan ! C’est vraiment un sacré événement pour nous, fans français, d’avoir enfin un concert de Journey à Paris. Comment le ressens-tu car cela fait bien des années que nous attendions, depuis 1979 je pense ?
Jonathan Cain : Notre ancien chanteur Steve Perry avait la drôle d’idée de ne pas vouloir venir à cause de  l’esprit anti-américain qui régnait ici dans les années 80, il ne voulait pas passer pour un saltimbanque ou quelque chose dans ce goût-là, sa réaction était trop exagérée, nous ne sommes pas venus parce qu’il ne voulait pas venir et nous pouvions pas le faire changer d’avis et donc nous ne sommes pas venus.

Et quand il a quitté le groupe, nous avons rencontré des français en 1998 aux USA qui étaient venus à nos concerts, puis nous avons alors décidé de venir en Angleterre avec Steve Augeri pour la 1ère fois, puis 4 autres fois en Europe et maintenant pour la 1ère fois enfin en France. L’album Generations a fait bouger les choses, nous avons joué aussi à Oslo et en Allemagne.


TvRockLive.com : Peux-tu expliquer le succès de l’album Revelation car un an après sa sortie, c’est la même magie sonore, les mêmes sublimes sensations, qui envahissent toujours l’auditeur que je suis ?
Jonathan Cain : Nous avons été très heureux de faire cet album, qui est très sensuel, très vite écrit et très vite enregistré. Et nous avons lu des choses intéressantes sur cet album.


TvRockLive.com : Est-ce que fut un vrai problème ou un grand danger pour le groupe de ne plus avoir de chanteur (après le départ de Jeff Scott Soto) ? Comment avez-vous affronté et résolu ce point sensible ?

Jonathan Cain : Non ce ne fut pas le cas, nous le savions et avons trouvé quelqu’un de plus soudé et de plus proche de Journey. Jeff Scott Soto a toujours été là de façon temporaire comme remplaçant pour moi. Ce fut quelqu’un de très bien comme remplaçant.

TvRockLive.com : Comme j’ai été pianiste plus jeune, j’ai toujours été fasciné par le claviériste que tu es. Les titres de l’album qui m’ont mis des étoiles dans la tête sont «After All These Years», «Where Did I Lose You Love» avec son extraordinaire final et aussi le merveilleux «Turn Down The World Tonight» qui me rend toujours dingue (je sais que tu en as composé 2). Quelles sont les principales qualités pour un grand claviériste comme toi ?
Jonathan Cain : Eh bien, tu sais que dans ce groupe, les claviers prennent une place importante dans les chansons, ils apportent de l’émotion, de belles sensations, de la couleur, sans avoir beaucoup de riffs autour, mais j’utilise mon piano avec ma voix pour donner de l’envie, aussi j’essaie de participer à la composition. Je ne suis pas fan de fusion avec mes claviers.


TvRockLive.com : Je voudrai zoomer sur ce titre «After All These Years» : est-ce pour toi l’archétype d’un titre de Journey par excellence, musicalement parlant bien sûr et surtout par les paroles (même si c’est une histoire d’amour) ? Etes-vous devenus ce que vous désiriez être à vos débuts ?
Jonathan Cain : Oh oui bien sûr, tout simplement oui, je pense que le piano est un instrument romantique et mon boulot est d’apporter cette part de romance à Journey, comme avec les titres suivants : «Faithfully», «Open Arms».

TvRockLive.com : A propos du concert de ce soir, avez-vous préparé quelque chose de spécial pour le public français ou est-ce que ce sera un concert «classique» : anciens titres mélangés avec les nouveaux ?Jonathan Cain : Oui quelques anciens titres et des nouveaux bien sûr, c’est un bon mélange, vous pouvez vous attendre à pas mal de titres du dernier album, car ils sont suffisamment bons et aussi parce que nous avons un nouveau chanteur.

TvRockLive.com : Considères-tu que c’est une renaissance pour le groupe d’avoir maintenant Arnel Pineda comme nouveau chanteur ? Il nous rappelle beaucoup Steve Perry, est-ce pour le groupe la garantie du succès ?
Jonathan Cain : Je pense que c’est vrai, il a les capacités, la personnalité pour être bien avec tout le monde, et même pour créer au sein du groupe à l’avenir. Il est très discipliné aussi. Mais aussi s’il ne boit pas trop de rhum dans le tour bus !!!!

TvRockLive.com : Quelles sont pour toi les comparaisons entre Generations et Revelation, musicalement parlant bien sûr ?
Jonathan Cain : Je pense que Generations était une sorte de carte postale pour les fans, nous nous sommes bien amusés à chanter, ce fut juste une occasion sympathique, une sorte d’exercice, un essai de style au niveau enregistrement, mais Revelation est plus qu’un album, il reflète un caractère plus spirituel car il y a beaucoup de réflexions sur chaque composition.

TvRockLive.com : Quels sont vos projets d’ici la fin de l’année ?
Jonathan Cain : Nous allons attaquer un nouvel album. A la fin de l’année nous entrerons en studio, disons au début de l’hiver, après nous irons en Amérique du Sud pour une autre tournée. Et dans mes projets, je vais travailler avec ma fille à Nashville car elle compose aussi.

TvRockLive.com : Parle- nous un peu de ton nouveau piano Fazioli, appelé «le Faz» s’il te plaît !
Jonathan Cain : Pour moi le Fazioli est un instrument spécial, il a une nouvelle sonorité, très marquée, il sonne différemment des autres pianos, car mon vieux Yamaha était vraiment trop vieux. Nous avons obtenu un sacré son avec lui, mais impossible de le transporter au Bataclan pour ce soir, malheureusement !

TvRockLive.com : Parle-nous un peu des fans américains : y a t-il toujours une forte adhésion au Rock mélodique là-bas et à la musique que vous leur donnez ? Comment imagines-tu le Rock mélodique d’ici 2030 en tant que claviériste ?
Jonathan Cain : Toujours au piano, bien sûr, je ne prétends pas changer beaucoup, Journey possède un son, un style développé dans les années 70, nous savons ce que veulent les fans, nous voulons sortir les albums qu’ils veulent entendre. Je pense que c’est la clé pour garder notre identité, nous essayons toujours de produire de bonnes chansons. Sans bonnes chansons, ce n‘est pas possible. Aussi nous continuerons notre route ainsi, toute notre vie, c’est pour nous la meilleure condition d’avoir nos fans avec nous.

On the occasion of Journey‘s visit to Paris for a concert at the Bataclan on June 16, 2009, I had the immense joy of being able to meet the keyboardist of the band Jonathan Cain, and to do an interview for the site www.nath-urlich.com, in partnership with Radio Mercure. It is a very important memory that I wanted to share and bring back to life this unique moment through TvRockLive.com.

TvRockLive.com : It’s a great honour for me to meet you and have the opportunity to ask you questions about your monumental career of course ! Many thank Jonathan !

TvRockLive.com : It’s really a great event for us, French fans, to have a Journey show in Paris. How do you feel this event waited for years by us, from the 80’s or the 70’s I don’t know?
Jonathan Cain : Our old singer Steve Perry had a funny desire about not coming because of trouble of anti-American sentiments back in the 80’s, he didn’t want to be a busker of something like that, he was over reacting, we didn’t come because he didn’t want to come, and we couldn’t make him come, so we didn’t come. And then he left the band so in 1998 we see some French fans in the States and we came from some shows in UK with Steve Augeri for the first time, fourth times in Europe and now the first time in France. Generations makes wheels turning, we played in Oslo, in Germany.


TvRockLive.com : Can you explain the success of the album Revelation because one year after its release, it’s the same magical sound, the same fantastic feelings invading the listener I am?
Jonathan Cain : We were very lucky about this album very smooth, very quickly written and recorded. And read some interesting things about it.


TvRockLive.com : Was it a real problem and a great danger for the band when you were without singer (after the departure of Jeff Scott Soto) ? How have you face it and resolve this sensible point?
Jonathan Cain : No we knew and found someone more scudded more closed to Journey. Jeff Scott Soto was only a temporary as replacement, always for me. He was a good replacement.


TvRockLive.com : As I was pianist younger, I was always fascinated by the keyboardist you are. The songs in the album where you put stars in my head are «After All These Years», «Where Did I Lose You Love» with its tremendous ending and the wonderful «Turn down the world tonight» which makes me mad. (I know you compose 2 of them). What are for you the principal qualities of a more than great keyboardist?
Jonathan Cain : Well, you know in this band keyboards are part of the song, brings feeling, emotions, colours, not necessary too many riffs, but I use the piano with my voice to set the mood so I tried to make soundtracks. I am not for fusion for my keyboards.

TvRockLive.com : I wanted to focus on this song «After All These Years» : it is for you the Journey song by excellence, musically speaking of course and overall by the lyrics (even it’s a love story) ? Have you all of you became as you wanted to be at your beginnings?
Jonathan Cain : Yes of course, simply yes. I think the piano is a romantic instrument, and my job is to bring a romance to Journey, with the songs, like «Faithfully», «Open Arms».

TvRockLive.com : Have you prepared something special for the French audience or it will be a «classic» show : old songs, with the new ones?
Jonathan Cain : Some old some new yes, it’s a good mix : you may expect to have a lot of songs of the new album because they are good enough and it also because we have a new singer.

TvRockLive.com : Do you consider it’s a rebirth for the band to have now Arnel Pineda as the new singer? He remains Steve Perry a lot, is it for the band the guarantee of success?
Jonathan Cain : I think it’s right, he has capabilities, he has personality to get along with everyone, to maybe create with us in the future. He is very displicined. But not if he takes too much rum in the bus!!!

TvRockLive.com : What are for you the comparisons between Generations and Revelation, musically speaking of course?
Jonathan Cain : I think Generations was a sort of postcard for fans, we sing songs for fun, it was pretty casual, a kind of exercise, a new recording style, but Revelation is more an album, and it’s more spiritual because there are reflections on every composition.

TvRockLive.com : What are your projects for the end of this year?
Jonathan Cain : We are going to start a new album. At the end of the year we’ll enter in the studio in winter, after South America, then another tour. So in my projects I am going to work with my daughter, in Nashville, and she is writing also.

TvRockLive.com : Speak us about your new piano a Fazioli called «le Faz», please!
Jonathan Cain : Fazioli is a special instrument, it has a new voice, very obvious, it sounds different than the others, and my old Yamaha was too old. We got a good sound with it, but impossible to bring it to the Bataclan for tonight, unfortunately.

TvRockLive.com : Let us speak a little of American fans : is it always a great adhesion to melodic Rock there and the music you give to them? How do you imagine Rock music in 2030 as a keyboardist?
Jonathan Cain : Just by piano so, I don’t pretend to change too much, Journey has a sound, a style developed in the 70’s, we know what the fans want, we want to make albums they want to hear. I think it’s the key to retain our identity. We will focus on good songs. Without good songs, it’s not possible. So we’ll go on this way, all of our life, it’s for us the great condition to have our fans with us.
