Iceland is predicting an exceptional year of the Northern Lights, according to me it is the Metal ones that will shine all year round, honoring several festivals and including the one we are interested in here, the Reykjavik Deathfest 2023. The capital is going to enjoy a beautiful weekend battered by autumn winds and sunsets punctuated by waves crashing on the dark beaches. Reykjavik, I missed you!
Created in 2016, the event was buried after the 2019 edition under the name Reykjavik Metalfest, due to the Covid break from which some will not recover. Against all odds and thanks to 3 furious people from the Icelandic Deathcore band Devine Defilement: Stefan, Arek and Ingo (+ Helgi in the control room) surrounded by a team of about 15 people, the fest takes off again at the end of 2023 by offering underground Death Metal of the most surprising and tasty. All kinds of « cores » are part of the fest such as Grindcore, Straight-Up, Death, Blackened Death, Deathcore, even Pornogrind.
Let’s not forget that Reykjavik is very open-minded and therefore allows a multitude of bands to express themselves, each more virtuoso than the last. Gaukurinn‘s usual venue, located in the centre of the capital, is eclectic enough to remain the centre of attention this weekend and host the 16 bands selected by the trio. Realizing the importance of their music scene, these three warriors had the audacity to revive this lost festival.
As soon as they were announced, they received a tsunami of messages to participate and had a hard time choosing between more than 70 groups. How did they choose? « The feeling and the level of execution, » Stefan told me with some regrets about not being able to accommodate more bands.
After a pre-party/warm-up on Thursday, there will be two evenings on Friday and Saturday 28 and 29 September, the most underground since 2016. You don’t just see the place, you hear it! The sounds that come out like devils through the walls will guide me straight into the demon’s lair.
A few steps to climb and I find myself warm in hell, it’s the magical moment when nothing has changed, I’m like yesterday in 2019 when Benighted set the audience on fire. Svartcrown was also part of the party. It was the old fest team, who, having been at the maximum of their programming, wanted to move on… Suspense… Something tells me it’s brewing.
Accompanied by a Bloody Abyss, a drink especially created by @Danzerin of the Gaukurinn team for the event, I witness the reserved joy of the reunion of the assembly of all ages. It’s dark and 5 degrees outside. Inside, we are suffocated in an organized chaos barely bigger than a Viking longship.
With or without light, it’s hard to beat up on the boards and the circle pits are getting organized. I see Mercyful Fate, Dimma, Baroness, Canibal Corpse and Solstafir T-shirts passing by furtively. About 200 people will cross paths during the fest.
A « Hotdog » break is mandatory during these evenings, the booth being a few steps away, the leader of Mulciber attests that they are « amazing ». On the way back to the room located on the first floor near the port, the vibratory force of the sounds of this extreme music escapes into the deserted street. We come across a few silhouettes in evening dresses, a cocktail at the museum opposite. Cyclists in the cold. Everyone lives together. This is the strength of the country.
The program is so eclectic and quality for a first fest that it was delicious. Enough words, I’ll let you get an idea on Spotify of this first confidential edition of the genre and now an anthology.
Each in their own style, all these bands are absolutely amazing : Duft, Epidermal Veil, Spawned From Hate, Changer, Ashen Tomb, Mulciber, False Majesty, Inchoation, Kookaveen. To be followed by the two emerging Icelandic bands Krownest and Ruun of great maturity. Bowel Evacuation, all masked, a flayed in tights, exceptional in derision and a musical force to die for (2 basses, a drum kit, a screamer: « Is there no guitarist? No need! » ). Acranius because the boss attitude! Massive Ulfud and Devine Defilement because they’ve always been on top of their game from the beginning.
After this first edition, Stefan and Arek are delighted, « it’s a success », so there will be a next edition under the name Reykjavik Deathfest Spring Slaughter 2024 where already new bands are in : Cytotoxin, Ovaera, Dustwalker, Devine Defilement….More TBA…
Stefan, Arek and Ingo are part of the Icelandic youth who are passing the torch in their own way, as is traditionally done here. For the record, this week, France had its dinner in Versailles and I had my underground festival in a bar in Reykjavik. The antipodes are what will always drive me.

L’Islande nous prédit une année exceptionnelle d’aurores boréales, pour ma part ce sont celles du Metal qui brilleront toute l’année, mettant à l’honneur plusieurs festivals et dont celui qui nous intéresse ici, le Reykjavik Deathfest 2023. La capitale va bénéficier d’un beau Week-End battu par les vents d’automne et les couchers de soleil rythmés par les vagues s’échouant sur les plages sombres. Reykjavik, tu m’avais manqué !
Créé en 2016, l’évènement fut enterré après l’édition de 2019 sous l’appellation Reykjavik Metalfest, en raison de la pause Covid dont certains ne se relèveront pas. Contre toute attente et grâce à 3 furieux du groupe de Deathcore islandais Devine Defilement : Stefan, Arek et Ingo (+ Helgi en régie) entourés d’une équipe d’environ 15 personnes, le fest reprend son envol en cette fin d’année 2023 en proposant du Death Metal Underground des plus étonnant et savoureux. Tous types représentés tels Hardcore, Grindcore, Straight-Up, Death, Blackened Death, Deathcore et même Pornogrind. N’oublions pas que Reykjavik est d’une grande ouverture d’esprit et laisse donc s’exprimer une multitude de groupes tous plus virtuoses les uns que les autres. La salle habituelle de Gaukurinn, située en plein centre de la capitale est suffisamment éclectique pour rester le centre de l’attention ce Week-End et accueillir les 16 groupes sélectionnés par le trio. Réalisant l’importance de leur scène, ces trois guerriers ont eu l’audace de remettre sur pied ce festival perdu. Dès leur annonce, ils ont reçu un tsunami de demandes de participation et ont eu bien du mal à choisir entre plus de 70 groupes. Comment ont-ils fait pour choisir ? « Le Feeling et le niveau d’exécution » me dira Stefan avec quelques regrets de ne pouvoir accueillir plus de groupes.
Après une pré-Party/Warm Up le jeudi, s’ensuivra deux soirées vendredi et samedi 28 et 29 septembre les plus Underground depuis 2016. On n’aperçoit pas seulement l’endroit, on l’entend ! Les sons qui se dégagent comme des diables à travers les murs vont me guider tout droit dans l’antre du démon. Quelques marches à gravir et je me retrouve au chaud en enfer, c’est l’instant magique où rien n’a changé, je suis comme hier en 2019 où Benighted avait mis le feu, laissant l’assistance impressionnée. Svartcrown faisait aussi partie de la fête. C’était l’ancienne équipe du fest, qui, ayant été au maximum de leur programmation, voulait passer à autre chose… Suspens… quelque chose me dit que ça se prépare.
Accompagnée d’une Bloody Abyss, boisson créée spécialement par @Danzerin de la Team Gaukurinn pour l’événement, je suis le témoin de la joie réservée des retrouvailles de l’assemblée tous âges confondus. Il fait noir et 5 degrés dehors. A l’intérieur, on étouffe dans un chaos organisé à peine plus grand qu’un Drakkar de Viking. Avec ou sans lumière, ça tabasse sévère sur les planches et les Circles Pits s’organisent. Je vois passer furtivement des T-Shirts Mercyful Fate, Dimma, Baroness, Canibal Corpse et encore et toujours Solstafir. Environ 200 personnes se croiseront durant le fest.
Une pause « Hotdog » est obligatoire durant ces soirées, le stand se trouvant à quelques pas, le Leader de Mulciber atteste qu’ils sont « Amazing ». En regagnant la salle située au premier étage près du port, s’échappe dans la rue déserte la force vibratoire des sons de cette musique extrême. On croise quelques silhouettes en robe de soirée, un cocktail au musée d’en face. Des cyclistes frigorifiés. Tout le monde cohabite. C’est la force du pays.
La programmation est tellement éclectique et de qualité pour un premier fest que s’en est délicieux. Trêve de mots, je vous laisse vous faire une idée sur Spotify de cette première édition confidentielle du genre et maintenant d’anthologie. Chacun dans leur style tous ces groupes sont absolument incroyables : Duft, Epidermal Veil, Spawned From Hate, Changer, Ashen Tomb, Mulciber, False Majesty, Inchoation, Kookaveen. A suivre les deux groupes islandais émergents Krownest et Ruun d’une grande maturité. Bowel Evacuation, tous masqués, un écorché en collants, exceptionnels de dérision et d’une force musicale à tomber (2 basses, une batterie, un hurleur : « ya pas de guitariste ? Pas besoin ! »). Acranius parce que l’attitude de Boss quoi ! Ulfud massif et Devine Defilement parce qu’ils sont toujours au top depuis le début.
Après cette première édition, Stefan et Arek sont ravis, c’est un succès, il y aura donc une prochaine édition sous la dénomination Reykjavik Deathfest Spring Slaughter 2024 où déjà de nouveaux groupes répondent présents : Cytotoxin, Ovaera, Dustwalker, Devine Defilement….More TBA…
Stefan, Arek et Ingo font partie de cette jeunesse islandaise qui passe le flambeau à sa manière comme on le fait traditionnellement ici. Pour mémoire, cette semaine, La France a eu son diner à Versailles et moi mon festival Underground dans un bar de Reykjavik. Les antipodes, c’est ce qui m’animera toujours.
