Satan Metal Festival @ Stykkisholmur Iceland – june 6th to 8th 2024

The Icelandic metal scene was in mourning for its most important festival whose founders left for other spheres. Built on the foundations and not on the ashes of the Eistnaflug (last edition in 2022), Satan is Gisli Sigmundsson’s genius idea. With years of experience in various events and a fine connoisseur of the local scene, Gisli won the craziest bet to build this festival in the West region in the Snaefellnes peninsula, a 3 hours drive from the capital and we are all very happy, it’s much closer than Neskaupstadur and the region is very beautiful!
Satan is an authentic version of a festival on a human scale, as I love it, where we meet the « family » again. The newcomers and the one we thought we had lost or never had the chance to be seen again through the reunion of those who showed the way. Communion in the extreme musical diversity of well-known or lesser-known bands is THE concept of this festival.
It is obvious that all these musicians know how to reinvent themselves again and again and attract an audience of enthusiasts of all styles (Nordanpaunk, ReykjaDoom Festival, Rvk Deathfest, etc.) who, despite the indiscipline to take their places in advance, have answered the call. Let me tell you what you already know : remember to take your tickets in advance, it avoids raising (for the wrong reasons) the adrenaline level of the organizers !
In the town’s sports hall, rehabilitated and redecorated as a concert hall, Gisli has succeeded in bringing the legends of Ham and I Adapt to the stage to bring the past back to life by mixing it with the present and I can assure you that there is nothing nostalgic about it. On the contrary. All the bands of the Satan festival are excellent in their genre and the legendary quality of their playing is well established. That’s on paper, now I invite you to listen to all these bands. Each of them is a piece of Iceland.
Listening is not the only way to unravel the secret. Come to the site to realize how much you haven’t seen anything yet. In a calm natural setting where multiple islands emerge as soon as you leave the harbor and where no more road exists except the open sea, you will encounter the excellence of metal in the most total humility. I think these musicians are not aware of the extent of their talents and it’s a shame that we don’t know them abroad. Moreover, everything seems possible here, for example the presence of the ex-President who came especially from Reykjavik to inaugurate the festival, speaking on stage before kick-off! Come on, I’m taking you to my longest day of the year : 3 days without night, of hustle and bustle and furtive rest so as not to miss any of this madness.
P.S : : I’m going to spare you all the exclamations of joy and superlatives that will be redundant, so you’ll stay focused on the essential: the bands. When I arrived at the airport, the volcano had calmed down and only left smoke visible, it was 5°, wind to dehorn the cuckolds and to tell the truth, I didn’t care! I am here! and I’m going to try not to forget anything or anyone, so much to do and see and so many incredible encounters in a welcoming and safe environment (if you behave like an idiot, you’re out). Hail Satan!
Satan Day Off -1 Wednesday, June 5th:
Fyrirparty in Narfeyrarstofu in other words « move from hell festival-goer and go to the Narfeyrarstofa restaurant at 6pm to celebrate Satan before the official opening tomorrow! That’s good, I can’t sit still!
Satan Day 1 – Thursday, June 6, 2024:
Having braved an ocean and crossed the Snaefellsnes peninsula in 3 hours of carpooling with my besties and their infernal playlist, I disembark in the small harbor of Stykkisholmur. My hotel is waiting for me there, at the end of the road, as if my destiny had been stopped in its tracks, after that, it’s the open sea. The weather is average, it’s cold and I think the wind is going to drive me crazy. Impatient and joyful, I go without delay to the FossHotel for the « off » which will host interviews, musical demonstrations and conferences in the early afternoon during these 3 days. Today it starts with a podcast, an interview between Addalbjörn Tryggvason (Solstafir) and Dagur Gislason (Mysthirming). Then, our unavoidable master in the art of interrogation Gunnar Sauerman will take part of this awaited interview of David Vincent (Vltimas).
I have just enough time to go down from the Fosshotel towards the concert hall below. I push the door, the opening has just been celebrated by the former president, i can feel the enthusiasm of the audience, I see a tattoo artist setting up for the weekend and it’s off to big sound :
Krownest
Young, talented, full of energy, their eclectic tracks (melodic Hardcore) taking up all the black, groove, thrash influences, give something for all tastes, this band is surprisingly mature (I won’t reveal their age). Some members play in other bands, which has always been the case in Iceland, which is why the mix of styles is this level high and the musicians virtuoso. Part of the Wacken Open air in August 2023, I discovered them at the RVK Deathfest last October.
Mur
Let’s take some Krownest with new companions, which gives this new band, a level up, Kari sets the mood with his keytar. He has a real stage presence and the compositions are audacious. To be followed for sure since the band will play in another festival outside Iceland the next day. No album to sink your teeth into it (french translation) yet but it shouldn’t be long…
Vltimas
We no longer introduce legendary David Vincent (ex-Morbid Angel) who will pace the stage with his magnetic charisma under the red lights, all mysticism borrowed. The assembly does not miss a beat, obsessed by this apparition. I wasn’t ready to see it so quickly, the band was scheduled very early due to a busy schedule but there you go, surprise!
Volcanova
The heavy and efficient Stoner of the trio moves the first circle pits. This group is to be discovered without delay. Colorful with 70’s covers and well-crafted tracks they have been active since 2014, a bit out of Iceland, maybe you already know them ?
Angist
Founded in 2009 and then stopped, it’s the winning comeback of this female duo who are giving their first show in 8 years and it doesn’t look like it is. The Satan magic allowed this moment of real emotion in the audience and these two musicians who took great pleasure in playing tonight. These girl power agitated duet and direct death blackened don’t drink only water. You surely find them in 2025 on the stage of the Inferno in Oslo, they are back for good!
Power Paladin
The room turns crazy when Power Paladin starts its set. I don’t really understand what’s going on with these musicians in short shorts and tank tops. The frenzy starts from the first riff and never stops. The room is turned upside down, black metallers included (yes, I saw!). We are all dried up in front of them when the song « forever Young » is covered, folded in less time than it takes to sing it. I’ll do a little interview with Ingi (guitarist and founding member) so that he tells me his incredible story (to be continued). Power metal is so great!
Une Misere
The next band is massive, after the happy metal, the slap of the collective Une Misere who has changed frontman and vel gert, I venture to say that it’s even better. He always comes and goes like a caged lion, this is surely the effect caused by the waves hitting the walls and coming back on stage.
Solstafir and die (it sounded better in french)…
Obviously, seeing the band on its land is a magical moment, the audience has taken out the hoodies, we gather in front of the band 2.0, tonight new drummer and Svavar new haircut. Saethor is masterful and Addi leads the game, imperial. Otta is the apotheosis of this exceptional moment that leaves me screaming the last note in chorus from the depths of my guts. Even Mr. Security couldn’t believe it, neither did I!
Satan Day 2 – Friday, June 7, 2024:
The weather is fine today, less windy. I have an appointment at the restaurant with the Satan team where I order a specialty: plokkfiskur. The atmosphere is excellent and everyone is delighted to exchange with the others. I feel an osmosis that will not leave me for the all weekend, as if finally, in this latitude, we were all on the same wavelength after having gone through the storms. Happy to be there, to meet again and ready for projects, stories and aware of writing one at this very moment. After a quick coffee, some go on a boat, slide between the volcanic walls and discover the surroundings by sea, others go on foot to visit the city of Stykkisholmur and then it’s time to go and see the conferences at the FossHotel. I attend an impressive demonstration of drums and guitar and explanations on the routine of these extraordinary musicians. It’s work, beyond normal. I had no doubt about it, I now have proof of it. One conference caught my attention, that of an inclusion program concerning the place of women and trans people in today’s society (Stelpur Rokka kynning). The initiative is remarkable. I want to know more but the language barrier prevents me from doing so. I need to know more about it.
Gaddavir
I’m losing my pen, the black and yellow checked shirts have been fidgeting and screaming into the microphone since 2017 and released an album in 2022. They end their set with « King » by Satyricon, who rallies the whole assembly to the cause. In the dark, the hardcore of the group awakens in me a je-ne-sais-quoi of François des Garçons Bouchers. It’s funny that I think about this band because at the moment, France is preparing for the legislative elections (I watch the video « La lambada, on n’aime pas ça » while writing).
Morpholith
Massive, noisy and dirty psychedelic doom sludge has been hanging around the underground of the capital of since 2017 as well.
Nadra
Black as I like it with a well-known figure, DG of Misthyrming, who has been playing for different bands, including this one since 2008. Blood, sweat and adrenaline are the trilogy related to these compositions.
Endless Dark
Created in 2009, an album in 2017 but here they are, post-hardore metalcore, the singer of Une Misere associated with another in clear voice makes a surprising contrast. The styles are dissociated but yet beautifuly complementary.
Helfro
In black death, I would like the rising star of the capital please. They are on the rise and we would do well to take an interest in them, my friends. That’s the moment when I was drawn outside to chat about everything and music with a whole bunch of people. I meet a French couple Livia and Gérome who are finishing their trip to the festival before returning home. I would not be the only representative of France!
Audn
It’s always a pleasure to see them play. This band, which exports internationally, has acquired a high level in a few years. They are hypnotic. Online, they form a wall of sound in front of the ecstatic audience under epileptic lights and send their atmospheric black metal in our face.
Arcturus
Here comes some Norwegians, not just any Norwegians, of course. Created in 1994 by Hellhammer (ex-Mayhem) and Sverd, their avant-garde metal got the better of my attention. I am taken outside to see new arrivals.
I Adapt
So there… Be careful, lions are unleashed. It is an historic moment that Icelanders are living and they are allowed to cross the crash barriers and go on stage. The dads are over the moon to see their kids, perhaps, doing their first stage diving and it’s a joyful chaos that closes on the visibly delighted frontman in the middle of the screaming crowd. The band is reborn from its ashes and invites Heida Eiriks as an incredible guest and Krummi Bjorgvinsson as a no less incredible guest! Icelanders are all 15 years old, « totaly insane! » a sweaty guy will tell me.
Gisli imagined and succeeded in reuniting this cult group that disappeared for 20 years but that everyone remembers. I Adapt is legendary. It seems that Gisli has a magic phone that allows him to make all his dreams come true and we take advantage of it. I have two or three ideas to submit to him …
We stay outside for a while after the end, no one wanting to leave. It’s 5°, in the light of the night, we discuss with each other the state of hardcore in the 80s and then the latest chicken recipe or lambs that populate the meadows while I freeze on the spot.
Satan Day 3 – Saturday june 8th 2024:
This morning, I visit the Lutheran church of Stykkisholmur with its modern architecture until it is time to return to the FossHotel for the day’s conferences. I observe a contest of strongmen next to the concert hall. Do you remember « The Mountain » in GOT, he’s Icelandic (Hafthor Bjornsson) but no, it wasn’t him! Just to explain that this type of contest is very important in the country. In the old times, crews of the boats were tested by having them lift stones, so they were assigned a job or not. There is also a beach where these stones can be lifted: the Dritvik Stones. That’s it for the info page.
So, let’s start this afternoon with our favorite journalist Gunnar Sauermann who hosted the conference « state of Icelandic metal outside the country » during which I was able to say few words with two professionals Laetitia Abbenes and Annelot Van Der Staak (Season of mist). We also discussed how each of us supports the festival and the bands at our level and for my part, being a story teller, a witness to the story that I transcribe in the form of a report. I was happy to be able to express myself although the exercise was a little intimidating. Jan Martin Jensen (Inferno) spoke as well as Gisli and Thorsteinn Kobeinsson (Satan) about the organisation of festivals. Another conference about the different festivals in Iceland and their constraints was very interesting as well as the interview with Blood Red Throne. It was then time to return to the concert hall.
Merkur changes name into Miskunn
A start to the day that struggled to get off the ground despite the efforts of this band from the Vestman Islands who deserved more encouragement.
Daudyflin
Free, the girls scream and agitate, the overflowing energy of the trio got the better of me. I’m going to have a coffee.
Nyrst
Like a preacher of darkness, the singer, clinging to his microphone made of reindeer antlers, overturns his bust of black rags from which we can see his rolled back eyes. Mystical, disturbing, under the red light of Satan.
Devine Defilement
A killer of brutal deathcore slam, as I saw them in October for the Reykjavik Deathfest. They are everywhere, they are unstoppable !
Wolf Brigade
Swedish group born in 1995 that has never ceased to overcome difficulties and which has been returning since 2014 in a sinister, aggressive register, that’s their definition.
Blood Red Throne
The audience remains captivated by the set of this band whose effective growl and hammering drums invite to circle pits. The frontman will tour the room praised to the skies. A young man in a T-shirt M’Bappé follows him, the image is crazy.
Misthyrming
At last, I see them! (bad luck on some bands that I systematically miss), obviously I’m impressed by the stage power of the band and the frontman DG. I wasn’t ready to realize what happens from time to time, to find yourself in a band with an incredible set that glues you until the last note and where there’s nothing left to say anymore because the violence of the silence takes your guts. Black above Black.
Ham
This is the band I was most looking forward to, having followed their career and albums since my first visit to Iceland some years ago. I had been told about it from the beginning, about this singular madness (clothes and sounds) and this brilliant and modern breath that they brought to the music and to each of the people I know here. A kind of improbable dream that came to life in front of me. This band was created in 1988, split, reformed. There are 9 albums in style. I invite you to listen to them, you will inevitably wonder about many things. The end draws a sigh from me. It’s too sad to leave.
That’s it, it’s already the end. We parted ways hoping for a second edition that Gisli confirmed for 2025. The countdown has begun although we have not yet really left the room. Goodbyes take time. I walk again under the thick canopy of clouds in the clear sky to pull a few more threads of hours forward.
This three-day weekend was just a long day of euphoria, as the night went elsewhere in this season. With a heavy heart, I still happy until I land at Charles de Gaulle, Paris where I ear that the National Assembly has just been dissolved. Listening to this news, I then suffer a cold shower worthy of the Icelandic weather (it’s for context!). Should we prepare for another type of chaos ? The chaos of music was good enough for me, reality catches up with me like a backlash in the back of my head, in this crazy world. I project myself to hopefully be there in Stykkisholmur 2025, because SATAN will be back from June 5th to 7th, with some bands already booked such as Skalmold, Beneath, Momentum, Bastardur, Sinmara, Vafurlogi…

La scène Metal islandaise était en deuil de son festival le plus important dont les fondateurs sont partis vers d’autres sphères. Bâtie sur les fondations et non sur les cendres de l’Eistnaflug (dernière édition en 2022), Satan c’est l’idée de génie de Gisli Sigmundsson. Fort d’années d’expérience au sein de divers évènements et fin connaisseur de la scène locale, Gisli a gagné le pari le plus fou de bâtir ce festival dans la région Ouest dans la péninsule de Snaefellnes à 3h de route de la capitale et on est tous très contents, c’est beaucoup plus proche que Neskaupstadur et la région est très belle !
Satan est une version authentique d’un festival à taille humaine, comme on les aime où l’on retrouve la « famille ». La nouvelle avec ses nouveaux arrivants et celle qu’on croyait avoir perdue ou ne plus jamais revoir à travers la réunion de ceux qui ont montré le chemin. La communion dans la diversité musicale extrême des groupes connus ou moins connus est LE concept de ce festival hors du commun.
Il est évident que tous ces musiciens savent se réinventer encore et toujours et attirer un public de passionnés tous styles confondus (Nordanpaunk, ReykjaDoom festival, Rvk Deathfest, etc.) qui, malgré l’indiscipline à prendre ses places d’avance a répondu présent. On vous le dit et le répète, pensez à prendre vos places à l’avance, ça évite de faire monter (pour de mauvaises raisons) le taux d’adrénaline des organisateurs !
Dans la salle de sport de la ville, réhabilitée et redécorée pour l’évènement, Gisli a réussi le tour de force de faire monter sur scène les légendes que sont Ham et I Adapt pour faire revivre le passé en le mélangeant au présent et je peux vous assurer que cela n’a rien de nostalgique. Au contraire. Tous les groupes du Satan festival sont excellents dans leur genre et la légendaire qualité de leur jeu n’est plus à faire. Ça c’est sur le papier, maintenant je vous invite à écouter tous ces groupes car chacun d’entre eux est un morceau d’Islande.
Écouter n’est pas le seul moyen de percer le secret. Venez sur place pour vous rendre compte à quel point vous n’avez encore rien vu. Dans un écrin de nature calme où de multiples îles émergent dès la sortie du port et où plus aucune route n’existe sauf le large, vous rencontrerez l’excellence du Metal dans une humilité la plus totale. Je pense que ces musiciens n’ont pas conscience de l’étendue de leurs talents. De plus, tout semble possible ici, par exemple la présence de l’ex-Président qui s’est déplacé spécialement de Reykjavik pour inaugurer le festival, prenant la parole sur scène avant le coup d’envoi ! Allez, je vous emmène dans ma journée la plus longue de l’année : 3 jours sans nuit, d’agitation et de repos furtif pour ne rien rater de cette folie.
P.S : Je vais vous éviter toutes les exclamations de joie et les superlatifs qui seront redondants, vous resterez donc concentrés sur l’essentiel : les groupes. A mon arrivée à l’aéroport, le volcan s’est calmé et ne laisse à voir que des fumées, il fait 5°, du vent à décorner les cocus et à vrai dire, je m’en fout ! Je suis là ! Et je vais essayer de ne rien oublier ni personne, tant il y avait à faire et à voir et tant de rencontres incroyables dans un environnement accueillant et safe (si tu te comportes comme un con, tu dégages) Hail Satan !
Satan Day Off -1 mercredi 5 juin :
Fyrirparty à Narfeyrarstofu autrement dit bouge-toi festivalier de l’enfer et rendez-vous au resto Narfeyrarstofa à 18h pour fêter Satan avant l’ouverture officielle demain ! Ça tombe bien, je suis impatiente et je ne tiens pas en place !
Satan Day 1 – Jeudi 6 juin 2024 :
Ayant bravé un océan et traversé la péninsule de Snaefellsnes en 3h de covoit’ sur une Playlist infernale, je débarque dans le petit port de Stykkisholmur. Mon hôtel m’attends là, à la fin de la route, comme si mon destin était stoppé net après c’est le grand large. Le temps est moyen, il fait froid et je crois que le vent va me rendre folle. Impatiente et joyeuse, je me rends sans tarder au FossHotel pour le « Off » qui accueillera les Interviews, les démonstrations musicales et les conférences en début d’après-midi durant ces 3 jours. Aujourd’hui ça commence fort avec un Podcast, une Interview entre Addalbjorn Tryggvason (Solstafir) et Dagur Gislason (Misthyrming) puis ce sera au tour de David Vincent (Vltimas) de passer devant notre incontournable maître dans l’art de l’interrogatoire Gunnar Sauerman toujours présent aux rendez-vous pour un entretien très attendu.
J’ai juste le temps de redescendre du Fosshotel en direction de la salle qui se situe en contre-bas. Je pousse la porte, le baptême d’ouverture vient d’être célébré par l’ancien président, les passionnés sont présents et nombreux, une tatoueuse s’installe pour le Week-End et c’est parti pour du gros son :
Krownest
Jeunes, talentueux, plein d’énergie, leurs titres éclectiques (mélodique Hardcore) reprenant toutes les influences Black, Groove, Thrash, en donnent pour tous les goûts, ce groupe est surprenant de maturité (je ne vous donne pas leur âge). Certains membres jouent dans d’autres formations, ce qui a toujours été le cas en Islande, c’est pourquoi le mélange des styles est de plus en plus pointu et les musiciens de plus en plus virtuoses. Participants au Wacken Open Air en août 2023, je les avais découvert au RVK Deathfest en octobre dernier.
Mur
On reprend Krownest mais avec de nouveau compagnons, ce qui donne ce groupe, un cran au-dessus, Kari pose l’ambiance avec son keytar. Il possède une vraie présence scénique et les compos sont audacieuses. A suivre assurément puisque le groupe fera le lendemain un autre festival en dehors de l’Islande. Pas encore d’album à se mettre sous la dent mais cela ne devrait pas tarder…
Vltimas
On ne présente plus la légende David Vincent (ex-Morbid Angel) qui arpentera la scène de son charisme magnétique sous les lumières rouge, tout de mysticisme emprunt. L’assemblée n’en manque pas une miette, obnubilée par cette apparition. J’étais pas prête à le voir aussi vite, le groupe a été programmé très tôt dû à un Planning chargé mais voilà, surprise !
Volcanova
Le Stoner lourd et efficace du trio bouge les premiers Circles Pits. Ce groupe est à découvrir sans tarder. Haut en couleurs avec des pochettes 70’s et des titres bien ficelés ils sont actifs depuis 2014, un peu sorti d’Islande, peut-être les connaissez-vous déjà ?
Angist
Fondé en 2009 puis, stoppé, c’est le retour gagnant de ce duo féminin qui donne son premier show depuis 8 ans et on ne dirait pas. La magie Satan a permis ce moment de franche émotion dans le public et ces deux musiciennes qui ont pris un plaisir immense à jouer ce soir. Ça boit pas que de l’eau et c’est Girl Power agité et direct Death Blackened. Vous pourrez les retrouver en 2025 sur la scène de l’Inferno à Oslo, elles reprennent du service !
Power Paladin
La salle se transforme en une baraque à frite, enfin l’ambiance évidemment, lorsque Power Paladin commence son Set. Je ne comprends pas trop ce qui se passe avec ces musiciens en Shorts roses et débardeurs. La frénésie commence dès le premier riff pour ne plus s’arrêter. La salle est retournée, Black métalleux inclus (si, j’ai vu !). On est tous séchés devant eux lorsque le titre « Forever Young » est repris, plié en moins de temps qu’il n’en faut pour le chanter. Je ferai une petite Interview avec Ingi (guitariste et membre fondateur) histoire qu’il me raconte son incroyable histoire (à suivre). Le Power Metal c’est trop génial !
Une Misere
L’enchaînement est massif, après le Happy Metal, la claque du collectif Une Misere qui a changé de Frontman et bravo, je me risque à dire que c’est encore mieux. Il va et vient toujours comme un lion en cage, c’est surement l’effet provoqué par les ondes qui frappent les murs et reviennent sur scène.
Solstafir et mourir…
Évidemment, voir le groupe sur ses terres est un moment magique, le public a sorti les Hoodies, on se recueille devant le groupe 2.0, ce soir nouveau batteur et nouvelle coupe de cheveux de Svavar. Saethor est magistral et Addi mène le jeu, impérial. Otta est l’apothéose de ce moment exceptionnel qui me laisse hurler en chœur la dernière note du fond de mes entrailles. Même Mr Sécurité n’en est pas revenu, moi non plus !
Satan Day 2 – Vendredi 7 juin 2024
Il fait beau aujourd’hui, moins de vent. J’ai rendez-vous au resto avec la Team Satan où je commande une spécialité : le plokkfiskur (brandade de morue améliorée). L’ambiance est excellente et tout le monde est ravi d’échanger avec les autres. Je ressens une osmose qui ne me quittera pas du Week-End, comme si enfin, sous cette latitude, nous étions tous sur la même longueur d’onde après avoir traversé les tempêtes. Contents d’être là, de se retrouver et avides d’échanges, de projets, d’histoires et conscients d’en écrire une en ce moment même. Après un rapide café, certains vont sur un bateau, glisser entre les parois volcaniques (je ne me risque pas) et découvrir les environs par la mer, d’autres vont à pieds visiter la ville de Stykkisholmur puis c’est l’heure d’aller voir au FossHotel les conférences. J’assiste à une impressionnante démonstration de batterie puis de guitare et d’explications sur la routine de ces musiciens hors normes. C’est du boulot, au-delà de la normale. Je n’en doutais pas, j’en ai la preuve.
Une conférence a retenu mon attention, celle d’un programme d’inclusion concernant la place des femmes et des trans dans la société actuelle (Stelpur Rokka Kynning). L’initiative est remarquable. J’ai envie d’en savoir plus mais la barrière de la langue m’en empêche. Je vais aller creuser ce sujet.
Gaddavir
Dans le noir, le Hardcore du groupe réveille en moi un je ne sais quoi de François des Garçons bouchers. C’est marrant que je repense à ce groupe puisqu’en ce moment, La France se prépare à voter les législatives (je me remets en écrivant ce Report « La lambada, on aime pas ça »). J’en perds mon stylo, les chemises à carreaux noir et jaune s’agitent et hurlent dans le micro depuis 2017 et ont sorti un album en 2022. Ils finissent leur Set par « King » de Satyricon, qui rallie toute l’assemblée à leur cause !
Morpholith
Le Sludge Psychédélique Doom massif bruyant et sale traîne dans l’Underground de la capitale de depuis 2017 également.
Nadra
Du black comme on aime avec à sa tête une figure connue, DG de Misthyrming qui se prête à différents groupe dont celui-ci depuis 2008. Sang sueur et adrénaline sont la trilogie afférente à ces compos.
Endless Dark
Créé en 2009, un album en 2017 mais ils sont là, Post-Hardore Metalcore, le chanteur de Une Misere associé à un autre en voie claire est surprenant de contraste. Les styles sont dissociés mais pourtant complémentaires.
Helfro
En Black Death, je voudrais l’étoile montante de la capitale s’il vous plaît. Ils ont le vent en poupe et nous ferions bien de nous y intéresser mes amis. C’est à ce moment que j’ai été attirée à l’extérieur pour papoter de tout de rien, de musique avec tout un tas de gens. Je rencontre un couple de français Livia et Gérôme qui terminent leur voyage au festival avant de revenir chez eux. Je ne serais pas la seule représentante de la France !
Audn
C’est toujours un plaisir de les voir jouer. Ce groupe qui s’exporte à l’international a acquis un haut niveau en quelques années. Ils sont hypnotiques. En ligne, ils forment un mur du son devant le public extatique sous les lumières épileptiques et nous envoie leur Black Metal atmosphérique en pleine face.
Arcturus
Tiens des norvégiens, pas n’importe lesquels évidemment. Créé en 1994 par Hellhammer (ex-Mayhem) et Sverd, leur Metal avant gardiste a eu raison de mon attention. On m’emmène voir dehors de nouveaux arrivants.
I Adapt
Alors là… Attention les fauves sont lâchés. C’est un moment historique que les islandais vivent et ils sont d’ailleurs autorisés à franchir les Crash barrières et monter sur scène. Les Papas sont aux anges de voir leur progénitures faire, peut-être, leur premier Stage Diving et c’est un joyeux chaos qui vient se refermer sur le Frontman visiblement ravi au milieu de la foule hurlante. Le groupe renaît de ses cendres et invite Heida en Guest incroyable et Krummi en Guest non moins incroyable ! Les islandais ont tous 15 ans, « Totaly Insane ! » me dira un gaillard en sueur.
Gisli a imaginé et réussi le tour de force de réunir ce groupe culte disparu des radars depuis 20 ans mais dont tout le monde se souvient. I Adapt est légendaire. Il semblerait que Gisli ait un téléphone magique lui permettant de réaliser tous ses rêves et nous en profitons. J’ai bien deux trois idées à lui soumettre …
Nous restons un moment dehors après la fin, personne n’ayant envie de partir. Il fait 5°, dans la clarté de la nuit, on discute les uns avec les autres de l’état du Hardcore dans les années 80 puis de la dernière recette de poulet ou des agneaux qui peuplent les prairies pendant que je congèle sur place.
Satan Day 3 – Samedi 8 juin 2024
Ce matin, je visite l’église Lutherienne de Stykkisholmur à l’architecture moderne jusqu’au moment de regagner le FossHotel pour les conférences du jour. J’observe un concours d’hommes forts à coté de la salle de concert. Vous vous souvenez de « La Montagne » dans Got, il est islandais (Hafthor Bjornsson) mais non c’était pas lui ! Juste pour expliquer que ce type de concours est très important dans le pays. A l’origine, on testait les équipages des bateaux en les faisant soulever des pierres, ainsi, on leur attribuait ou non un poste. Il y a d’ailleurs une plage où ces pierres sont soulevables : les pierres étalon de Dritvik. Voilà pour la page info.
Donc, on démarre cet après-midi avec notre journaliste préféré Gunnar Sauermann qui animait la conférence « état du Metal islandais hors du pays » au cours de laquelle j’ai pu dire quelques mots aux cotés de deux professionnelles du métier Laetitia Abbenes et Annelot Van Der Staak (Season Of Mist). Nous avons échangé aussi sur la manière dont chacune d’entre nous soutien le festival et les groupes à notre niveau et pour ma part, mon travail qui est celui d’être une Story Teller, un témoin de l’histoire que je retranscris sous forme de reportage. J’ai été contente de pouvoir m’exprimer bien que l’exercice ait été un peu intimidant. Jan Martin Jensen (Inferno) a pris la parole ainsi que Gisli et Thorsteinn Kobeinsson (Satan) concernant l’organisation de festivals. Une autre conférence sur les différents festivals en Islande et leurs contraintes était très intéressante ainsi que l’Interview de Blood Red Throne. Ce fut alors le moment de regagner la salle de concert.
Merkur rebaptisé Miskunn
Un début de journée qui a du mal à décoller malgré les efforts de ce groupe venu des Îles Vestmann qui aurait mérité plus d’encouragements.
Daudyflin
Sans complexes, les filles crient et s’agitent, l’énergie débordante du trio a eu raison de moi. Je vais prendre un café.
Nyrst
Tel un prédicateur des ténèbres, le chanteur accroché à son micro composé de bois de rennes, renverse son buste de haillons noirs d’où l’on distingue ses yeux révulsés. Mystique, inquiétant, sous la lumière rouge de Satan.
Devine Defilement
Une tuerie de Slam Brutal Deathcore, comme en octobre pour le Reykjavik Deathfest. Ils sont partout, on ne les arrête plus !
Wolf Brigade
Groupe Suédois né en 1995 qui n’a cessé de surmonter les difficultés et qui revient depuis 2014 dans un registre sinistre, agressif, c’est leur définition.
Blood Red Throne
Le public reste captivé devant le Set de ce groupe dont le Growl efficace et la batterie martelante invite aux Circle Pits. Le Frontman fera le tour de la salle porté aux nues. Un jeune en T Shirt M’Bappé le suit, l’image est folle.
Mispyrming
Enfin, je les vois ! (malchance sur certains groupes comme ça que je rate systématiquement), évidemment je suis impressionnée par la puissance scénique du groupe et du Frontman DG. J’étais pas prête à réaliser ce qui arrive de temps à autre, se trouver devant un groupe avec un Set incroyable qui vous scotche jusqu’à la dernière note et où on ne se dit plus rien tellement la violence du silence vous prend les tripes. Du Black au-dessus du lot.
Ham
C’est le groupe que j’attendais le plus, ayant suivi leur carrière et albums depuis ma première visite en Islande il y a 9 ans maintenant. On m’en avait parlé dès le début, de cette folie singulière (vêtements et sons) et de ce souffle génial et moderne qu’ils ont apporté dans la musique et dans chacun des gens que je connais ici. Une sorte de rêve improbable qui a pris vie devant moi. Ce groupe a été créé en 1988, a splitté, s’est reformé. Il existe 9 albums. Je vous invite à les écouter, vous aller forcément vous interroger sur beaucoup de choses. La fin m’arrache un soupir. C’est trop triste de partir.
Voilà, c’est déjà la fin. On se sépare en espérant une deuxième édition que Gisli confirme pour 2025. Le compte à rebours a commencé bien que nous ne soyons pas encore réellement parti de la salle. Les aurevoirs prennent du temps. Je me ballade encore sous la voûte épaisse des nuages dans le ciel clair pour tirer encore quelques fils d’heures avant de partir. Ce Week-End de trois jours ne fut qu’une longue journée d’euphorie, puisque la nuit est partie faire un tour ailleurs en cette saison. Le cœur serré, je repars pourtant heureuse jusqu’à mon atterrissage à Charles de Gaulle où j’apprends que l’assemblée nationale vient d’être dissoute. Je subis alors, à l’écoute de cette nouvelle une douche froide digne de la météo islandaise (c’est pour le contexte !). Devons-nous nous préparer au chaos ? Celui de la musique me suffisait, la réalité me rattrape comme un retour de bâton derrière la tête, dans ce monde de fou. L’avenir arrive à grands pas. Je me projette à Stykkisholmur en 2025, Satan reprendra du service du 5 au 7 juin 2025, avec déjà : Skalmold, Beneath, Momentum, Bastardur, Sinmara, Vafurlogi…
